Chapter 20

“I can’t thank y’all enough for having a nigga back during all of the madness. I know all of y’all know Dee is home and he is doing fine. You can’t hold a real nigga down for long,” Smoke said while chuckling. Laughter could be heard throughout the room and each of the guys told him that no thanks was needed because they knew, without a doubt, that if the tables were turned, he would have their backs as well. “Shit still ain’t all the way cool because the person responsible for taking him hasn’t been dealt with, but they will be as soon as we find out all the details. But on the business tip, we got niggas that think we some pussies and they gon be dealt with too,” Smoke said.

He stood there thinking about everything that Peanut had filled him in on and became angry. “This shit that’s been popping off seems like some personal shit. It’s coming from a coward mu’fucka and, when I find out exactly who it is, it’s muthafuckin on. I know the talk has been floating around about me retiring and shit, but y’all niggas know good and got damn well that I ain’t leaving until shit get straight,” Smoke told his crew. They all nodded their heads, letting him know that they understood exactly where he was coming from. “I need everybody to stay on their P’s and Q’s. I know y’all be on it, but we gotta move smoother because bitch ass niggas are watching. A new shipment will be arriving today, but it’s not getting delivered to the location it normally goes to on Saturdays. I don’t need nobody thinking we hiding shit and tryna keep y’all outta loop when shit like this changes. We just gotta move smarter,” Smoke continued.

When Smoke was done talking, he chopped it up with a few of his crew members. They expressed their happiness about Dee being returned home safely and let him know that they still had their eyes and ears opened in the streets for any new information. He thanked them and told them how much he appreciated them before he left. His next stop was going to be at his apartment before heading back to Kamora’s house. D’Mani was ready to play basketball and his coach told them that he would be happy to let him finish out the season. There were three games left and they only had three losses so far this season. One that resulted in forfeiting the day after D’Mani was kidnapped. The team couldn’t pull themselves together, which was totally understandable to the coaches, as well as parents.

Smoke made it to his apartment and went straight to add his money to his safe. I have more than enough money to live comfortably for the rest of my life, so I really gotta find some more things to invest in and leave these streets alone, he thought to himself. As soon as he opened the safe, he noticed the ring he bought for Kamora and smiled.
